Adopt, Don't Shop
By: Mala and Tessie
Happy Holidays! Thank you for following us. We hope you enjoy our missives and find our dog wisdom valuable.
This holiday season, we are grateful for our family. We are lucky dogs to have parents who dote on us and take us to do so many fun things. They view us not as pets but as members of the family.
We are both rescues. Mala came to Colorado from New Mexico through Ruff Rescue, and Tessie was rescued from Texas by New Hope Cattle Dogs. The cats are rescues, too. They were born in a Wyoming barn.
We know that pets are sometimes gifted at the holidays, so we wanted to encourage anyone thinking of getting a new pet this holiday season to adopt rather than shop. There are so many wonderful cats and dogs in need of a loving home. It breaks our hearts to see so many on our Instagram feed. Some dogs have been waiting for a home for a long time.
Many people think they can’t find the breed they’re looking for at a rescue or shelter, but that’s not true. There are organizations that work with specific dog breeds. Many dogs end up in shelters, even purebred dogs. Although we think mutts are the best, we’re biased. Tessie may not be 100% cattle dog, but she looks and acts like one and has the added advantages of being able to relax and of loving to cuddle. Mala is a one-in-a-million mutt with a beautiful coat, a stellar personality, and is extremely loyal.
If you are looking for a puppy, New Hope has several available for adoption now! A more mature, or senior, dog could be a great addition to your family as well. Don’t overlook those who, through no fault of their own, have found themselves looking for a family in their golden years. Maybe their owner passed away, or had to move somewhere that didn’t allow pets, or found themselves in circumstances where they no longer had the time or funds to care for their dog. There are many reasons a dog can end up in a shelter.
If you’re looking for a furry new family member, we hope you find the perfect match and give a deserving rescue dog or cat a chance.
Happy Holidays! We’ll be back with more dog wisdom in the new year. In the meantime, we wish you health and happiness.
