Dogs Have FOMO Too

My Mom and Dad think it’s funny that I get so excited to go to the grocery store. Whenever I see them pull the reusable bags down from the kitchen cabinet, I go wild. Usually, going grocery shopping means just that – we drive 15 minutes to the store, I wait in the car while they shop, and then we drive 15 minutes back home. But you never know what might happen. Sometimes, we stop at the park across the street from the store and take a hike first. Or we grab food for a road trip we’re about to take. I wouldn’t want to miss out on anything! And let’s be honest, even a car ride is more enjoyable than sitting at home.
Just like people, dogs also have a fear of missing out (FOMO). I’d rather take my chances and join in. I’ve always loved riding in the car. When I was a puppy, I used to sit on the console, but I grew too big for that. After too many times ending up in the lap of whoever was in the passenger seat, Mom finally bought a device to keep me in the back seat. She says it’s safer for everyone, but it makes it a little harder for me to see out the windshield. I enjoy watching to see where we’re headed. The device works as a headrest when I need a nap, though.

When we go on a long car ride, I eventually lie down, but as soon as the car starts to slow down or the blinker clicks on, I’m up! I don’t want to miss anything. Braking and blinkers might mean we’re almost at our destination, and it’s fun to see where we’ve ended up! Sometimes, a car ride means going to the vet for a vaccination and check-up, but most of the time, we go somewhere fun.
Saying yes to opportunities can lead to new adventures. I’m up for anything except live music, which is a bit too loud for me to have a good time. In the summer, I’m always the first one on the paddleboard. Most of the time, I’m waiting for my parents to finish getting ready – there’s so much they need to do to prepare for our outings. All I have to do is put on a harness (for hiking) or a life jacket (for paddleboarding), and I’m ready to go. They have to put on shoes, special clothes, bags, and who knows what else.
While it's important to ensure you have some downtime to recharge, life is short, and it’s best to spend the time you have doing what you love. Just make sure you’re engaging in activities because you genuinely want to, not just to please someone else. Live your life now; tomorrow is not guaranteed.
