Let's Get Hygge
Kali & Mateo
The past couple of weeks in Colorado have been cool and rainy, so we cats are jumping in today to give you some advice on getting cozy.
You may have heard the term Hygge (pronounced “hooga”) come up when the conversation turns to comfort. In recent years, this Danish quality has been embraced worldwide. Numerous books and articles have been written about this concept.
The word hygge dates back to around 1800; however, various definitions can be traced back to the Middle Ages, where a similar Old Norse word meant "protected from the outside world." The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as a kind of coziness that evokes feelings of contentment and well-being. Hygge is a central aspect of Danish culture and involves taking time away from the daily rush to be with people you care about or even to relax by yourself and enjoy life's simple pleasures.
Hygge is closely tied to the changing seasons. In the colder months, you might snuggle under blankets (something we cats highly recommend), while in the warmer months, it could mean picnicking outdoors. Winter is the prime time for hygge. The cold, dark, and wet climate during a Danish winter leads Danes to spend time together indoors with family or close friends.
Hygge embodies a feeling of comfort, contentment, and well-being through an appreciation for simple, everyday experiences. Hygge emphasizes creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, often achieved through soft lighting, candles, and natural elements.

When you gather with loved ones in the spirit of hygge, there is no agenda. You might celebrate life’s small joys or engage in interesting conversations to foster meaningful connections and enjoy each other’s company.
Hygge is personal and can be interpreted differently by individuals. What brings a sense of hygge to one person might differ for another. It’s all about finding joy in the little things and discovering what makes you feel content. You could:
Play relaxing music
Cozy up under a soft blanket
Read a good book
Relish in quiet company or tranquil solitude
We cuddle with each other on or under blankets or under the wood stove when our parents build a fire on chilly days. What’s your favorite way to experience hygge?
