Play to Your Strengths
By: Tessie
I run pretty fast, but my sister, Mala, is even faster. When we play, I need to be agile to stay one step ahead of her. Being small is an advantage because I can make quick turns. I can change direction instantly, which throws Mala off. She’s often moving too quickly to make the same turns I do and ends up running the wrong way for a moment until she adjusts.
I also use my surroundings to my benefit. If there are trees or bushes, I’ll run around them to create some space between us. Sometimes, Mala figures out my route and just waits for me to come full circle before resuming the chase.

Mala might be over 10 years old, but she’s still fast and loves to play. I enjoy wrestling with her, but sometimes I need a moment to catch my breath. All that running can tire you out. When I really need a break, I run to Mom or Dad. They help me by blocking Mala and reminding her that it’s good to rest between sprints.
We all have unique strengths, and to succeed in life, you need to recognize your talents and leverage them. Not everyone is good at everything, but I’m sure you possess a skill that others in your circle don’t. While some might advise you to improve your weaknesses, it’s more crucial to concentrate on building your strengths.
When she worked in the corporate world, Mom read a book called StrengthsFinder 2.0. The book included an access code to an online test so she could assess her top five strengths. Based on those top themes, the book offered actions and strategies for developing them. The idea is to find ways to do your best every day by using your natural talents.
I agree that focusing on your strengths makes more sense than trying to fix your weaknesses. I’ll keep honing my natural agility to outrun my sister. What is one of your natural talents that you can use to get ahead in your life?
